The European Commission has released its annual State of the Digital Decade report, assessing progress towards the EU’s 2030 digital targets. While the report highlights progress — such as basic 5G coverage in most Member States and an increase in edge computing nodes — it also identifies major gaps in the rollout of standalone 5G networks and fibre infrastructure. These technologies are vital for competitiveness, secure communications and industrial innovation in Europe. The report also points to significant digital skills gaps: only 55.6% of EU citizens possess basic digital skills, and there remains a shortage of ICT specialists, especially among women. Moreover, much of Europe’s digital infrastructure continues to rely on nonEuropean providers, increasing strategic vulnerability. In response, the Commission calls for greater public-private investment, a strengthened Digital Single Market, better access to venture capital, and a more agile regulatory environment for tech SMEs.
